Your feathered friends have been waiting for you! Ever wondered how to turn your backyard into a bird paradise? Whether you’re brand-new to bird feeding or just looking for fresh tips, this family-friendly class will help you roll out the welcome mat for your neighborhood birds—safely and responsibly.

Topics covered:

  • what type of bird food to offer and when (suet vs. seed) seasonal selections

  • different diets to attract different types of birds

  • feeding only the birds (deter racoons, squirrels, bear, rodents)

  • various types of feeders

  • where to place your feeders (safe distance from home)

  • how often to clean your feeders and with what cleaning solutions

  • birdwatching, identification, binocular basics

 

In 45 minutes, whether you’re a first-time feeder or a seasoned seed slinger, you’ll learn how to attract the right birds, keep out the uninvited guests, and spot your new winged neighbors up close. Then, spend 30 minutes exploring the sanctuary’s bird feeding stations, testing your new skills with binoculars we’ll provide, and identifying the winged wonders who stop by.

Led by Phil Robbins, manager of Wild Birds Unlimited Brookfield, you’ll leave ready to host the ultimate backyard bird buffet—one that’s good for the birds, your family, and the planet.

Introduction to Bird Photography

Have you ever tried photographing birds only to find they’ve flown off before you’re ready? Birds are among the most challenging and rewarding subjects to capture. In this beginner-friendly workshop, photographer Sandy Schill will guide you through the essentials to help you succeed.

You’ll learn about camera equipment, settings, and the principles of composition while also gaining insight into birding ethics, the best times of day for shooting, and how to create a bird-friendly photography station right in your own backyard. Bring your own phone, DSLR, mirrorless, or even film camera, and you’ll leave with practical tips to start capturing the feathered friends you love.

About the Instructor
Sandy Schill has been passionate about photography for more than 16 years, honing her skills through workshops, conferences, and as an active member of the Flagpole Photographers Camera Club in Newtown. While she enjoys portraits, still life, and landscapes, her true passion is bird photography. Sandy’s work has earned numerous local, state, regional, and international awards, including the prestigious MNEC distinction from the New England Camera Club Council.
